M42 Orion nebula by Gerry Aarts1993 viewsMy second attempt at processing this image achieved more detailed nebulosity then the first image posted earlier. Some 1270 light-years distant and 24 light-years wide. Imaged from my back yard in Cranebrook, a fringe Sydney suburb. Celestron GPS11 in altazimuth mode, Hyperstar f1.8 lens, Meade DSI III camera. 40 x 15 seconds (8 minutes) total exposures.gerry aarts

Side panels691 viewsThe above shot shows the wedge sides under construction. To ensure that the side panels were identical during the shaping phase, the 2 pieces of plywood were first screwed together.
I then added the altitude / declination adjustment slot. My main observing location (home in Sydney) is at Latitude 33 Degrees, 45 Minutes South, so to allow for my "infrequent" local travels to dark sky locations outside of the Sydney basin I cut enough play in the slots for 29 - 37 Degrees Latitude.

Helix Nebula by Gerry Aarts530 viewsThe Helix Nebula sometimes refered to s as the "Eye of God. Called a planetary nebula (nothing to do with planets), early astronomers thought they looked like planets. This is a supernova remnant, an ever expanding buble of gas from an exploded star. About 650 light-years distant this is one of the closest planetary nebula from earth. A combination of 20 x 15 seconds exposures. Image obtained at observing site , Linden Observatory 16th Septembert 2007. Celestron GPS11 telescope with Hyperstar f1.8 lens, Meade DSIc. 20 x 30 seconds exposures.gerry aarts

Horsehead Nebula by Gerry Aarts478 viewsA notoriously difficult object to view or image. The horsehead Nebula detail can best be extracted by using long exposure astrophotography and Photoshop processing techniques. Approximatly 1500 light-years distant and 3.5 light-years wide. Image taken at our obseving site at Linden Observatory in the Blue Mountains on 18th October 2007. Celestron GPS11 with Hyperstar f1.8 lens. Meade DSIc camera, 40 x 30 seconds exposures. gerry aarts

Leo Triplet ( M66 Group ) Galaxies by Gerry Aarts452 viewsA stunning sight this group of galaxies gives us an opprtunity to view or image a face on spiral, partly edge on spiral and an edge on spiral galaxy in the one field of view. Imaged this at WSAAG's Linden Observatory dark sky observing site. Appr 35 million light years distant.M66 & M65 on the bottom and NGC 3628 at the top. Celestron GPS11, f1.8 hyperstar lens, Meade DSI 111 Colour camera. A meteor or satelite crossed through the centre.gerry aarts
