M20 Trifid Nebula by Gerry Aarts212 viewsOne of my better nebulae images from Linden Observatory 04/05/2008. Distance estimated at 5200 lightyears. Red emmission nebula and blue reflection nebula shows a wonderful contrast. The star colours are also amazing, a myriad beautiful yellow and blue stars reveal themselves in this image. 9x30 seconds combined images. Celestron GPS11 with f1.8 Hyperstar lens, Meade DSI III camera.gerry aarts

Centaurus "A" Radio Galaxy by Gerry Aarts226 viewsNGC5128. Distance 15 million LY. Mag 7.00. A peculiar galaxy deignated a "radio" galaxy, the closest one of it's kind to our location. Details 40x30 seconds combined exposures. Celestron GPS11 EQ wedge. f3.3 focal reducer. Meade DSIc original Camera. South Pacific Star Party, Wiruna , Illford NSW Australia 05/04/2008gerry aarts

M33 Spiral Galaxy by Gerry Aarts366 viewsPart of the Local Group of galaxies that includes Andromeda and the Milky Way. M33 is not an ideal Southern Hemisphere object to view or image. I captured this one at Mudgee NSW when the galaxy was around 20 degrees above the horizon. 10 x 4 minute subs for a total of 40 minutes exposure. Celestron GPS11 with Hyperstar f1.8 lens and Meade DSI III camera.gerry aarts

M42 Orion nebula by Gerry Aarts1993 viewsMy second attempt at processing this image achieved more detailed nebulosity then the first image posted earlier. Some 1270 light-years distant and 24 light-years wide. Imaged from my back yard in Cranebrook, a fringe Sydney suburb. Celestron GPS11 in altazimuth mode, Hyperstar f1.8 lens, Meade DSI III camera. 40 x 15 seconds (8 minutes) total exposures.gerry aarts

NGC 2997 Spiral Galaxy by Gerry Aarts334 viewsA magnitude 10.1 Spiral galaxy inclined 45 degrees to our line of sight. About 24.8 million light years distant, located in the constellation Antilia. Best viewed in the Southern Hemisphere from February through to May. Imaged at the South Pacific Star Party, “Wiruna” Ilford NSW Australia in April 2008. Celestron GPS11, EQ Wedce, f3.3. Meade DSIc. gerry aarts

NGC 4565 Galaxy by Gerry Aarts351 viewsOne of the most spectacular edge on spirals you can view through your telescope. The bright central core bulges out of both sides of the galaxy. Around 49 million light years distant this is how our galaxy would appear if approached edge on. Imaged at our WSAAG Linden dark sky site in NSW Australia. 10 x 15 seconds combined exposures. Celestron GPS11, Hyperstar f1.8 lens, Meade DSI 111 camera.gerry aarts

Markarians Chain Galaxy Group by Gerry Aarts284 viewsI have counted 18 galaxies in this image, how many can you spot? This is part of a group of galaxies called "Markarians Chain". M86 in the centre is designated an "elliptical galaxy". It moves at some 3 million miles per hour through space in the Virgo Cluster. Imaged at our WSAAG dark sky site at Linden NSW Australia. 60x30 seconds combined exposures, Celestron GPS11, f1.8 Hyperstar lens, Meade DSI 111.gerry aarts

Leo Triplet Galaxies Close Up by Gerry Aarts336 viewsI had an opportunity to image these three beauties individually at the South Pacific Star Party, Ilford NSW Australia. Excellent dark skies allowed me to capture all three on the same evening. I was particularly pleased with the detail in m65 on the right when I compared it with some professional observatory images. Imaging details on image.gerry aarts

Leo Triplet ( M66 Group ) Galaxies by Gerry Aarts452 viewsA stunning sight this group of galaxies gives us an opprtunity to view or image a face on spiral, partly edge on spiral and an edge on spiral galaxy in the one field of view. Imaged this at WSAAG's Linden Observatory dark sky observing site. Appr 35 million light years distant.M66 & M65 on the bottom and NGC 3628 at the top. Celestron GPS11, f1.8 hyperstar lens, Meade DSI 111 Colour camera. A meteor or satelite crossed through the centre.gerry aarts

M104 Sombrero Galaxy by Gerry Aarts254 viewsThis is one strange looking, mostly edge on galaxy. The central core is thought to be a very massive and energetic black hole. Distance around 50 million light years. I imaged this one at the South Pacific Star Party, Ilford NSW Australia in March 2008. Celestron GPS11, EQ Wedge, f3.3, Meade DSIc camera. Processed in Photoshop.gerry aarts

Moon With A Hint Of Colour by Gerry Aarts315 views37 x .055 seconds images at f6.3, Celestron GPS11, Meade DSI III. A slight hint of subtle greens & reds are evident in this image. Mare Crisium the "sea" on the left is some 600 km. in diameter. The little crater in Mare Crisium is called Pickard and is some 22km in diameter. Can we see the astronauts Lunar Buggy with a telescope. Not a chance not even with the worlds largest or Hubble for that matter.gerry aarts

Saturn by Gerry Aarts319 viewsSpectacular Saturn from my backyard in Cranebrook (Sydney) March 14 2007. Celestron GPS11 with 9 mil lens. Panasonic Camcorder. 30 seconds of video at 27 frames per second, 91 of 630 seperate frames (images), stacked in Registax. That works out at about one image per second out of 27 frames. That brief moment of seeing where the other frames below 85% quality were eliminated to create one good image. Pretty neat eh?gerry aarts
